Let’s go Barking!

The fifth annual pilgrimage to the Saints of Barking takes place on Saturday 10 May. This year, we are delighted to welcome His Eminence Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia to the pilgrimage, who will speak during our time together on “What is a Saint?” The pilgrimage will run from 12:30 to 16:30 at Barking Abbey, next to St Margaret of Antioch Church, The Broadway, Barking, Essex, IG11 8AS. The services will be held in the Abbey but will be in the Church if it is wet. Pilgrims should bring their own lunch.

If you are interested in coming to the pilgrimage, please email

to register your interest or ask further questions.

The Abbey was founded in the 7th century by St Erkenwald for his sister, St Ethelburga, and was dedicated to the Mother of God. It was a beacon of spirituality and has many Orthodox saints associated with the site. The pilgrimage has become a regular feature of the Orthodox calendar, and we hope that it grows as more people discover the local saints of London and the South East of England.

Barking is well-connected for travel, on the mainline and London Underground networks.

Pilgrims can also opt to walk to Barking in a group led by Fr Philip Hall (from the Parish of All Saints of Lincolnshire). This group will meet at 09:00 at the Church of All Hallows by the Tower, next to the Tower of London, say prayers together and then walk to Barking – this is some 7.5 miles so will require walking at a medium pace.

Sounds great. I’m there I hope. Who’s organizing this event?

This is an annual event that has been going on for several years organised now by a practising Orthodox Christian, not an organisation. I’m not sure how public they want their name to be, but you can contact the organiser via the e-mail provided.

Thank you to Margaret Haig for organising such a wonderful event and lovely day out!
A small walking group led by Fr. Philip. and Mother Photina left All Hallows by the Tower and travelled on foot for 7 and a half miles to the ruins of Barking Abbey where they were met by even more pilgrims
There Fr Alexander Haig led a prayer service to the saints. followed by lunch, a visit to the medieval Curfew Tower and veneration of the Cross, an inspirational talk by Metropolitan Kallistos on “What is a Saint?”. This was rounded off by tea and lots of opportunity to meet Orthodox Christians from all over London.
This was the fifth annual pilgrimage – may there be many more!
